Your Collection Deserves to Be Seen
Collecting is only half the hobby. How you display your pieces is just as important — both for protecting them and for creating a space you're proud to show off. Whether you have a dedicated "nerd room" or just a shelf in the living room, smart display choices make your collection look intentional, impressive, and well-cared-for.
Choosing the Right Shelving
Not all shelves are created equal. The best option for you depends on the size, weight, and quantity of your pieces.
- IKEA KALLAX/BILLY — The gold standard for Funko Pop collectors. Modular, affordable, and sized perfectly for standard Pop boxes
- Floating wall shelves — Great for creating gallery-style displays with action figures or smaller statues
- Glass display cases — Ideal for high-value or very fragile pieces; protect from dust and handling
- Detolf cabinets (IKEA) — A popular choice for premium figures; the glass doors keep dust out while keeping pieces visible
Always anchor tall or heavy shelving units to the wall, especially if you're in an earthquake-prone region or have kids and pets in the home.
Lighting Makes Everything Better
This is the most overlooked aspect of display setups — and the one that makes the biggest visual difference. Good lighting transforms a shelf from a storage unit into a showcase.
- LED strip lights — Affordable, flexible, and easy to install. Run them along the top or bottom of each shelf for a dramatic glow effect
- Bias lighting — Placing lights behind your shelving unit creates a halo effect that adds depth
- Spotlights — Use small clip-on or puck lights to highlight a specific centerpiece figure
- Color temperature — Warm white (2700–3000K) gives a cozy, vintage feel; cool white (5000–6500K) looks more modern and crisp
Avoid direct sunlight — UV rays will fade paint, yellow plastic, and damage box art over time.
Layout Principles for an Impressive Display
Create Visual Hierarchy
Place your largest, most impressive pieces at eye level. Smaller figures work well on higher shelves. Reserve lower shelves for less visually striking items or boxed pieces.
Group Thematically
Collections look intentional when grouped by franchise, character, color, or era. A dedicated "Star Wars shelf" or "Masters of the Universe row" reads better than random mixing.
Use Risers and Stands
Acrylic risers, tiered display steps, and figure stands let you create depth and layers on a single shelf — so figures in the back are still visible. Many collectors use 3D-printed risers customized to their specific figures.
Negative Space Is Your Friend
Resist the urge to fill every inch of shelf space. Leaving some breathing room makes individual pieces stand out and prevents the "chaotic hoard" look.
Protecting Your Display
A great display is also a protected one. Key steps:
- Dust weekly using a soft brush or compressed air — dusting with a cloth can scratch painted surfaces
- Use UV-filtering glass or acrylic for enclosed cases if near windows
- Store loose accessories in labeled bags nearby rather than leaving them out where they can get lost
- For boxed figures, keep them away from humidity — moisture warps cardboard fast
Start Simple, Evolve Over Time
You don't need the perfect setup from day one. Start with clean, well-lit shelves, group your collection thoughtfully, and refine as you go. Many of the best collector setups you'll see online were built incrementally over years — piece by piece, just like the collections themselves.
